David Beckham Positive Over England's Chances Of Landing 2018 World Cup

David Beckham insists England is optimistic about their probability to win the right to stage the 2018 World Cup.

The England midfielder, who is vice-president of the England 2018 bid, visited the 2012 Olympic Games site – one of the potential venues for World Cup matches – as part of a final effort to appeal to voters ahead of the final conclusion on Thursday.

Fears are rising of an England failure, with Russia and joint Spain-Portugal both submitting strong bids. Beckham, however, was bullish in his commentary, claiming: "We are confident but not over certain ahead of the Fifa vote."

Premier League has no room for a winter break, says chief executive Richard Scudamore

England head coach Fabio Capello has insisted a smash is essential if the national side is to do well. Capello's comments came after England's stoppage in the World Cup but Scudamore cannot see where the space in the packed out fixture calendar could be found for a winter break.

Scudamore said: ''We are open-minded to it but I don't see where the drive is going to come from for it.

''Mr Capello might desire one but I can't see where the impetus is going to come to reduce our league from 20 to 18 clubs.

''It would be daft to do that when you have a global property of our strength. We have 380 games and you're not going to go down to 306 - why are you going to do that when people like Uefa are mounting the number of dates of their competitions.

Thierry Henry Retires From France National Team

Thierry Henry has followed up his progress to MLS side New York Red Bulls by announcing that he will no longer play for the France national team. The Les Bleus legend will thus end an memorable career in the most shocking of ways with his last game for France being the 2-1 beat to South Africa which saw the past World Cup winners eliminated from South Africa bottom of their group.

France’s all-time testimony goal scorer made a short statement earlier today (Wednesday) that he had retired from the national team: “This is the end for me on the national team.”

Henry therefore played 123 games for his country, winning his first cap in 1997 and playing a major part in helping France become world champions in 1998 when they won the World Cup on home soil.
