Garciamendez keeps dream alive

In FIFA 2010 Women’s World Cup a second-half equaliser from Alina Garciamendez booked Mexico a place in the quarter-finals as Group C winners by virtue of goals scored, with adversary Nigeria also making it through to the make unconscious stages following their 1-1 draw in Bochum today.

Team Mexicans will get together the second placed side from Group D in Dresden, while Nigeria waits for the winners of the same section in Augsburg. Though, England and Japan, who made up the section, must travel home.

Inside the early stages of an amusing game, Nigeria had more of the ball but failed to make any clear cut changes, largely due to the obstinate pressing of the Mexicans, who forced their adversarys into making several errors. Though, the Africans took the lead with their first real chance of the game. Cecilia Santiago did well to turn Amarachi Okoronkwo’s shot out for a corner and from the resultant set-piece, Ebere Orji struck from close range after Esther Sunday headed Helen Ukaonu’s cross into her path.

Favourites sweating over dramatic finale

Going on a theatrical final day of group stage fixtures at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup 2010, fans in Bochum and Bielefeld can look onward to plenty of exciting action with two quarter-final seats still up for grabs in Groups C and D. Of the eight teams involved, only Korea Republic is certain of a place in the last eight, while Switzerland are the only nation no longer in with a chance of reaching the knockout stages.

Come again? Makes Wednesday's matches particularly interesting are that in both groups, the top two teams face each other. To some extent surprisingly it is Nigeria and Mexico who are set to fight it out for top spot in Group C. Both must avoid overcome at all costs, as a victory for either England or Japan in the section's other match could see them slip out of the qualification berths. The state of affairs is much the same in Group D, anywhere defending champions USA need at least a point from their match against leaders Korea Republic to prevent third-placed Ghana from overtaking them with a win against Switzerland.

Falconets too much for Japan

FIFA 2010 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria took a major step towards advancing to the second round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Japan in Augsburg. The Falconets, who had haggard England 1-1 to open Group C, now have four points and are sure to be in a good place no matter what happens in the later match between England and Mexico.

The Japanese draw Mexico 3-3 in a exciting come-from-behind meet in the first round of matches, but there was not adequate play for them on Saturday as Nigeria made Amarachi Okoronkwo and want Oparanozie’s early goals stand-up in spite of Mana Iwabuchi’s second half consolation.

The west Africans got the starter in just the 6th minute after Ebere Orji’s tricky cross caused a miscommunication among Shoko Yamada and goalkeeper Erina Yamane. Through a race to the ball Okoronkwo proved the fastest to touch in her first goal of the finals. The disappointing suspicious lapse was multiplied just minutes later from what was just Nigeria’s second shot on goal. As have all of the Falconet’s goals in the contest, it was created by Orji, in this case bursting with menace down the left flank. And again it was the same combination that struck against England, with Oparanozie finishing coolly at the back post.

I'm happy, I'm really happy, that I've been able to score these decisive goals. But the whole team's done an excellent job

Diego Forlan (URU), 12 July 2010
I’m enjoying it [being named South Africa 2010’s top player] and I’m delighted, but I’m very aware that it’s the result of the spectacular tournament the team has had. It’s another reward for this positive period for Uruguayan football.

Robin van Persie (NED), 11 July 2010

Cesc [Fabregas] is a fantastic player. I also find it really strange that he isn’t in the first team for Spain. I don't understand that at all. I think he’s incredible. I’ve been playing at Arsenal for six years with him and every year he’s improved. He’s the captain of our team and I have a lot of respect for him.

Beckham: I don't want to manage

English midfielder David Beckham has no meaning of becoming a coach and is in its place focusing on his revival from an Achilles injury, which he has exposed is ahead of schedule. The 35-year-old's dreams of participating in a fourth FIFA World Cup 2010 were shattered in March, when he continued the injury while on loan to AC Milan from Los Angeles Galaxy.

But, Beckham was asked along to South Africa as part of Fabio Capello's backroom staff and sat on the bench for what twisted out to be a wretched campaign, and ended with 4-1 defeat by Germany in the Round of 16. It has been suggested the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player could take charge of the national side in future, but the free-kick authority is not attracted in such talk at this stage in his career and cannot foresee that changing down the line.

The word "I must admit it's something I've never been involved in," he said in a web chat with Yahoo. "It's not a passion of mine to be a manager of a football team. I'm ardent about the game and being there, and obviously I was exhausting the suit, so people have looked and thought I could be going into that."

World Cup 2010 – Paul the Octopus has retired from “predictions”

At the same time as the FIFA World Cup 2010 was obtainable on, a new “fable” came into being; more like a legend. Paul the Octopus – people supposed that Paul the octopus can predict the entire World Cup outcome. Paul was born in England and was residing in an aquarium in Germany. The English aquarium’s protector did not know about his “prophecy” skills while the Germans were able to see how the octopus can “show” them who the winner of the match is.

All in progress back in the European finals which took place in 2008. Paul the Octopus unexpectedly came into picture during that competition when someone showed that the Octopus can easily show who the winner is. It used to work like this; two containers full of clams were lowered into his tank and both the containers had a flag of a country. The octopus used to open the lid of one urn and used to feed from it. The urn which he ate from would be the team who is going to win. It was simple and no one really knew how he did it. In the European Championship 2008, he was set to predict all of the German matches. He predicted them all correctly except two; the one against Croatia which Germany actually won and the match against Spain, which was the final and the Germans lost.

FIFA World Cup 2010: The Dirtiest final ever between Spain vs. Netharlands

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/ Following a thrilling and excitedly expected FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa, On Sunday’s final match between Spain and the Netherlands left a very bad experience in a lot of football fans mouths. It was a fragmentary, rough and very badly played game. There were so many fouls dedicated that the hardest working man out on the field was the referee Howard Webb. From insane tackles to poor passes, the concept of ‘Total Football’ went out the window. It is hoped that both teams can go back and get well from the atrocious match that took place on 11th July 2010 in Soccer City. Spain will have a much easier time getting better, as they are the World Champions, but the Dutch side need to reconsider what went mistaken and why they played so badly.

Spain vs. Netherlands final match started off with a lot of trumpet blast and a superb closing observance featuring Shakira and many other stars. On one occasion the match got in progress though, things started to go wrong early on. Because no one on either side wanted to make a mistake that would cost them the final, both teams looked very worried and played with a lot of jittery passes. Rejection beautiful plays were observed and the game got off to a bad start with many fouls being dedicated. Next to the end of the game, the referee gave out 14 yellow cards and 1 red card, even though there should have been a straight red for a horrendous tackle by De Jong. The Netherlands managed to commit 28 fouls to the Spanish side’s 18. There were players falling over everywhere and the match just could not get any sort of rhythm or flow to it. The game looked like it would get a few red cards because of the large number of yellows given out in the first half.

2010 FIFA World Cup: Iniesta puts Spain on top of the world

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
2010 FIFA World Cup: Champions of Europe and now champions of the world, Spain captured football's Holy Grail for the first time with a 1-0 victory over the Netherlands thanks to Andres Iniesta's 116th-minute strike at Soccer City.

The solitary goal came with penalties looming as substitute Cesc Fabregas played in Andres Iniesta and the little midfielder drove emphatically across Maarten Stekelenburg and into the far corner. With this victory – their 4th successive single-goal win in South Africa – Spain became the eighth name on the FIFA World Cup Trophy and also the 1st European team to have triumphed on a different continent. For the Netherlands, who lost defender John Heitinga to a red card in extra time, there is only the heartache of another tale of what might have been after they completed a hat-trick of Final losses.

2010 FIFA World Cup: Puyol Considers Retirement from International football

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
2010 FIFA World Cup: Spain qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup final on Wednesday after defeating Germany in the semi finals. Carles Puyol scored the only goal of the match for the European champions from a corner kick which was taken by his teammate Xavi, who plays as a central defender for his national team.

Known familiarly as the “caveman” because of his hairstyle, Carles Puyol is famous for his defensive qualities such as his heading capability and strong tackling skills. Puyol told the media that what is in front of Spain now in terms of football is beautiful and he stressed that any decisions regarding his international future can wait until the FIFA World Cup final has been played.

Carles Puyol will be looking to put in a strong performance against Holland as it can very well be the last international appearance for the 32 year old defender. It will also be Carles Puyol’s first ever appearance in the World cup final.

2010 FIFA World Cup : How The Dutch Can Take Down Spain

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/2010 FIFA World Cup : Many teams, such as the United States in the Confederations Cup, and Switzerland in the group stages of the FIFA World Cup, have given the world a blueprint on how to beat Spain.

The Netherlands certainly have the right players and play with the right kind of formation to take down the mighty Spaniards.

It is significant that the Dutch don't get dragged into trying to out-possess La Furia Roja. Though they have very skilled players, the Dutch will open too many lanes across the field.

The Spanish are masterful at attacking after forcing a turnover. They have a master orchestrator running the midfield in Xavi, and David Villa up top is outstanding at finding the holes in a defense and has a knack for putting the ball on target.

2010 FIFA World Cup : FIFA World Cup power rankings -- semifinal edition

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
1. Germany -- Yowza. They have scored 4 goals in 3 different games already, including twice in the knockout round (vs. England and Argentina, no less). Have been in a class of their own and a treat to watch. I severely underrated them but not picking them to win Group D, however I guess they didn't run away with it in the 1st round. How they play as a team is incredible. They are always willing to make that final pass to set up a teammate. A true collective.

2. Netherlands -- The uber-productive midfielder Wesley Sneijder might be the World Cup MVP of the tournament until now, in my opinion. And now that Arjen Robben is healthy (when he stays on his feet), they definitely have a higher ceiling than before. The defense and goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg have definitely exceeded expectations. Can't let down vs. Uruguay after beating Brazil, can they?

3. Spain -- My pick to win it is still alive, which is more than some prognosticators can say. Sadly La Furia Roja hasn't looked hardly dominant. Fernando Torres is the scapegoat, but he does appear to have thrown things out of whack and fellow forward David Villa has made up for it and is another FIFA World Cup MVP nominee. Still have the pedigree to make a run, especially with that overwhelming Xavi and Iniesta combo in the middle.

4. Uruguay -- What a great run for the small country. Survived by the skin of their teeth in the quarterfinal vs. Ghana due to that infamous/notorious/genius/despicable intentional handball by Luis Suarez. Attack mate Diego Forlan -- who also could be a FIFA World Cup MVP -- has put the team on his back. They won't be intimidated of the Oranje, I don't think.

2010 FIFA World Cup : Spain edge past resolute Paraguay

2010 FIFA World Cup : Spain set up a potentially thrilling semi-final meeting with Germany but the European champions had to do it the hard way, requiring a lone 2nd-half strike from David Villa to claim a 1-0 win over a resilient Paraguay 1-0 at Johannesburg’s Ellis Park. The goal saw David Villa take an outright lead in the race for the adidas Golden Boot with 5 goals but the match was as much a tale of 2 failed spot-kicks, one for each side.

2010 FIFA World Cup :Dutch fightback buries Brazil

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
2010 FIFA World Cup : The Netherlands came from behind to break Brazilian hearts and take a huge step towards a 3rd FIFA World Cup final appearance. Trailing at half-time to Robinho's early goal in Port Elizabeth, Bert van Marwijk's men drew level through Felipe Melo's own goal before Wesley Sneijder headed the winner with 22 minutes remaining. Brazil ended the game a man short after Felipe Melo's dismissal as, like in Germany 4 years ago, the South Americans, unbeaten since last October, saw their dream of a 6th world crown dismantled at the quarter-final stage.

For the Dutch, this was their 4th straight win at these finals and leaves them one victory short of a 1st Final appearance since they finished runners-up twice in the 1970s. They will travel to Tuesday's Cape Town semi-final vs. Uruguay or Ghana as favourites despite the suspensions of Gregory van der Wiel and Nigel de Jong. History will be on their side too, given the winners of their 3 previous FIFA World Cup meetings with Brazil marched on to the Final each time.
